Butternut, aka white walnut, and black walnut are in the same family. Butternut is soft. I used 1/4" of epoxy to preserve this top.

I found a large piece of white oak that no one wanted. The crack was significant. I repaired top and bottom. I ebonized the red oak legs.

The odd gray wood top is maple, buried for over 100 yrs. The arch design is my own, but took some reinforcing to increase stability.
